This term most likely evolved from students who attended a prep school. With conservative values and manner of dress, the term preppie was born. You know, khaki pants, Izod shirts, boat shoes, and pearls.

This stuffy idea about prep school is outdated. Modern prep schools focus less on family name and more on diversity these days. You are just as likely to room with someone completely different, even from another country, as someone exactly like you.

Most prep school are privately funded and have large endowments. This allows for a better than average faculty with advanced degrees. Faculty retention is also easier because of tenure.

Academics are challenging and while the focus is on achieving your goals, prep schools also want a well rounded student. A variety of extracurricular activities are offered. There is something for everyone.

Life in a dormitory setting also mimics what the student will experience in college and better prepare them for life after high school. Students was gain a greater level of self sufficiency and responsibility in prep school.
